The museum houses books, paintings and other artefacts illustrating the life of the artist E A Hornell in the context of early 20th century Kirkcudbright.   It was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland and a major upgrade of the property was embarked upon.

The significant parts of the building were ‘preserved as found’.   In other areas sensitive alteration work was carried out to create improved visitor facilities and disabled access.   The building services were completely renewed.

New, sophisticated water, electrical, telecommunications, fire detection and prevention, intruder detection and environmental control systems including daylight monitoring and control were installed with minimal interference to the existing fabric and minimal visual intrusion.

This project won the RICS Award for Conservation 2005.
