Central Domestic Hot Water Plant, Western General Hospital
CLIENT: Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust
ARCHITECT: Not Applicable
M&E Value: £0.25m

The hospital was concerned about maintaining domestic hot water temperatures in the main system serving the kitchens and the main ward block as a precaution against Legionella.   It was decided to carry out a major upgrade of the domestic hot water generation system.

A new steam main was connected to a plant room and new semi-storage steam to water generators were installed to minimise water storage and maintain flow and return temperatures above those required for the control of Legionella bacteria, a vital consideration in hospital buildings where patients are often particularly vulnerable to the disease.
