Irons Foulner were part of the team appointed to carry out the very sensitive and difficult conversion project to re-generate the former Merchant’s house that had become known as Dymock’s Buildings in Bo’ness. The building had been badly treated by successive owners over the years and fallen into serious disrepair. It was saved by the National Trust for Scotland as part of the Little Houses Improvement Scheme and a remarkable restoration and reconstruction project was undertaken.

To make the building relevant and economically viable it was transformed into flats for Castle Rock Housing Association, but with minimal interference with the surviving external walls and sections of roof. Our challenge was to service the building with a centralised heating and domestic water installation that addressed the issues of fuel poverty faced by the prospective residents, and of course to do all of this in a way that was sympathetic to the historic fabric.

The end result must be one of the most special social housing developments in existence. The project received a Civic Trust Award 2005
